Come meet new friends and enjoy the sociability and opportunity for community service.
On November 6, 1978, Nancy Ritchie invited a few friends and neighbors to her home for a meeting to form a community garden club. Since that beginning, the Garden Club of Stone Harbor has worked to maintain and enhance the attractiveness of the Borough through gardening, landscaping, and educational programs. More than 160 current members raise over $5,000 from the Annual Tour of Homes, the Mother's Day Plant Sale, and the members' Holiday Auction to fund our community projects. Since its inception, the Club's major project has been the beautification of the Second Avenue Traffic Islands. More than seventy-five volunteers participate in the planting, weeding, and fertilizing of the flower beds.
We also plant and weed gardens in the following areas:
-
-122nd Street Garden of Remembrance
-
-Women's Civic Club
-
-Post Office
A social time with refreshments is held prior to each business meeting followed by a program featuring a garden topic. Special parties include a Christmas and June luncheon. In early September, a cocktail party for members and guests celebrates a successful growing season. Occasionally, field trips to gardens and sites of interest are planned. The Club joins the Avalon Garden Club on an annual excursion to the Philadelphia Flower Show. Educational activities include an October Flower Show held at the Elementary School, and a seed-planting program for first and second graders. The Club participates in the school's Arbor Day program by donating a tree to be planted on school property. Members are provided a membership directory. Our newsletter, Weed It and Reap, is printed twice each year, and a telephone "hot line" informs members of upcoming events.
